ESTATE 4.1 : accessing the impact of media and social media on democracy in Australia.
This presentation considers the relationship between media and democracy in Australia with reference to three themes: the Australian constitutional crisis of 1975; the concentration of media ownership favouring Murdoch’s News Corp; and the rise of social media as the main source of news in a ‘post-truth’ media environment.

John Potts is Professor of Media at Macquarie University, Sydney. He is the author or editor of 14 books. His most recent books are ‘Future Fear: Fear of the Future from Prehistory to Climate Change’ (2024) and ‘The Near-Death of the Author: Creativity in the Internet Age’ (2023).
